Avalakki/Poha Upkari

I'm sure, all you mangloreans out there will agree with me that Avalakki Upkari is one of the most simple and tastiest snacks ever! I had it for the first time at my in-laws place after my wedding and I loved it instantly!! I tried making it myself many times since then, but never got the masala right. So this time, I got my mother- in-law to make it for me and it turned out as good as ever! Avalakki upkari makes a very good evening snack!! It also goes really well with Upppittu/ Upma for morning breakfast. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

1.5 cups Thin poha/ paper avalakki
1 Onion, chopped finely
1 tsp Jeera seeds
3-4 Dry red chillies, low spiced
1.5-2 tsp Coriander seeds
1-2 strands Cilantro, finely chopped
1 tsp Lime juice
1 tsp Sugar
Salt as per taste

For tadka:

2 tsp Oil
3-4 Curry leaves
1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
A pinch of haldi
A pinch of hing

Method:

  1. Grind together red chillies, jeera and coriander seeds to form a smooth powder.
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl; Add the masala powder and toss well. Adjust ingredients according to taste.
  3. Temper with mustard, curry leaves, hing and haldi.
  4. Serve with hot tea/coffee and enjoi!

Hi Ramya,
Thank you for sharing the great recipe. My name is Gauri, came across your blog while surfing. I have a question on this avalakki, do you add raw onions to this mixture. Please clarify.

-Thanks,
Gauri.

Love it (Lit), Lit,Lit,Lit,Lit,Lit........I tried to source paper avalakki(nylon avalakki) here in Singapore but I did not find it. I satisfy myself with khara mandakki. We get thick avalakki where we make avalakki oggarane.

HI

Its a great snack. We make this with a small variant. We add 1/2 cup of fresh coconut gratings to the ground powder / masala. The coconut helps to soften the poha. Thanks for stirring memories with this dish.
